The Virgin story begins in 1967 when Richard launched Student magazine, aged 15.

1960s & 70s

1967

Richard sets up the Student Advisory Centre in 1967 to support thousands of young people with free advice on sexual health and relationships

Richard starts the Virgin Brand with the launch of Virgin Mail Order – launching companies in over 50 countries, all built to "Make People's Lives Better"

Richard supports Jane Tewson in starting Comic Relief – to combat the famine in Ethiopia and end poverty

1987

Mates Condoms is launched as a social business by the Virgin Healthcare Foundation to help halt the AIDS crisis

Virgin supports the London Air Ambulance helicopters saving lives in the large and crowded city

Virgin Atlantic flies aid into Baghdad and flies hostages out of the Iraqi capital ahead of the 1991 Gulf War

Virgin is one of the Founder Sponsors of the BRIT School – Britain's only free performing arts school

1995

Virgin Atlantic creates Change for Children, allowing travellers to donate foreign currency as they leave their flight, raising money to support young people

Virgin Atlantic operates a relief flight into the Caribbean to help people affected by Hurricane Georges

Richard receives a knighthood for services to entrepreneurship
